…the Sex Pistols’ film, “The Great Rock and Roll Swindle” was released.
The film was a somewhat incoherent post-breakup Sex Pistols fictional documentary told from the point of view of Pistols manager, Malcolm McLaren. In the film, McLaren contends that the Sex Pistols (and punk rock in general) were an elaborate scam perpetrated by him in order to make "a million pounds." Silly and hard to follow at times, but worth seeing for some great Pistols concert footage, some wickedly amusing animated sequences and Sid Vicious' eerily prophetic performance of "My Way."
"The Great Rock & Roll Swindle" starred Pistols guitarist Steve Jones as "The Crook", bassist Sid Vicious as "The Gimmick", drummer Paul Cook as "The Tea-Maker" and manager McLaren as "The Embezzler". Notably, singer Johnny Rotten (who was listed in the credits as "The Collaborator") only appeared in archival footage and as an animated character due to his refusal to have anything to do with the film.
